Potassium is one of the three macro elements essential to plant growth and development. The macro elements, which together with potassium include nitrogen and phosphorus, are so called, not because they are more important than the micro elements, but rather because they are needed and consumed in large quantities. It is important to take note of three points here.

*Firstly, by being required and consumed in large amounts, available potassium is liable to be lacking in certain circumstances.


*On the other hand, high concentrations of potassium are liable to reduce the availability to the plants' roots of micro elements such as magnesium. This element by playing an essential role in photosynthesis is no less vital to plant physiology than potassium itself.

*Thirdly, while potassium is easily leached from light sandy soils, it becomes attached to mineral clay particles in heavy soils, by virtue of its positive electrical charge. This means that uncontrolled applications of potassium fertilizer, can significantly increase soil salinity, the gravity of which should not be underestimated both for the health of the plants in the short term, and the soil in the long term.

The question for us gardeners therefore is how to ensure adequate supplies of potassium without affecting either the chemical balance of the soil or its salinity. The safest method is to feed the plants by regularly adding well-rotted organic matter to the soil like compost or commercially prepared humus. Compost as it breaks down to a mineral state, slowly releases nutrients in the soil, including potassium. Furthermore by improving the soil's aeration and expanding its micro biotic activity, mineral uptake of all essential elements is enhanced.

Before planting a new garden, carrying out a soil test will reveal the concentrations of potassium present. If these are below what's required, then adding compost may not by itself be enough to cover the shortfall. When I set up a garden I normally add slow release fertilizer to the compost and then rely exclusively on organic matter after a year or so. Slow release fertilizer is more expensive than readily soluble fertilizer, but much safer and less environmentally damaging.

Lawns under an intensive growing regime may also require additions of potassium in chemical form. From the point of view of root development, it is important to fertilize both in the autumn in Mediterranean climates, and in the early spring. Again I recommend the use of slow release fertilizer. Make sure, particularly in the autumn that the potassium value, marked by the chemical symbol K, is high relative to the N for nitrogen, and the P for phosphorus.

Iron is a mineral nutrient present in plants and animals. It is crucial to the human body because it aids in transporting oxygen via the blood throughout all the tissues and cells. This form of iron is called hemoglobin, which is approximately 65 to 75 percent of the iron in the body. Hemoglobin is a protein that forms part of red blood cells. Any surplus iron is stored in your body as reserve. Since iron can only be obtained from the foods we eat, it is vital to consume iron rich meat and vegetables so that the body can absorb the iron from your diet.

When you are not consuming enough sources of iron, your body starts using your reserves. When the reserves are gone too, the blood does not have enough iron and hemoglobin to transport oxygen as necessary. This is called anemia. The World Health Organization flagged anemia as one of the most widespread nutrient deficiencies in the world. Worse, low iron is the number one nutrient deficiency in the United States. Low iron is caused by any or a combination of three factors: low iron in your diet, poor absorption, excessive loss of blood.


The most common low iron symptoms are irritability, short attention span, a constant feeling of fatigue and weakness resulting to fainting or decreased performance at work or school. The body is more susceptible to infection, the tongue swells, and the person is always feeling cold. Infants and young children unfortunately show delayed cognitive development. The above-mentioned symptoms seem generic and vague, so much so that these are often dismissed as laziness or symptoms of stress. The demographics that are at risk are children, teenagers, senior citizens, pregnant women, women of child-bearing age and athletes.

The body is not capable of producing iron. Instead, it sources its iron needs from food. There are two types derived from food, non heme iron and heme iron. The non heme type is found in plant-based foods, such as vegetables, seeds, fruits and grains, among others. Heme iron is present in meat, poultry, fish and other animal products.

The body does not absorb the entire iron content of the food you eat. There are three main factors, which affect the amount absorbed by your body. These are: type of iron, the level of your body's reserves and any factors that increase or decrease iron absorption.

The level of your body's reserves is the main determining factor when it comes to the amount of iron you absorb. Low reserves prompt the body to absorb more. With high reserves in place, the body reduces the amount of iron it absorbs.

The type of iron and the presence of absorption inhibitors and enhancers also affect overall absorption. Heme iron is absorbed more efficiently than the non heme type. Foods containing absorption enhancers like vitamin C, increase the absorption of non heme iron, while foods containing absorption inhibitors like tea or coffee reduce absorption.

There are many different ways to treat iron deficiency anemia. The type of treatment depends on the cause of the deficiency and the severity of the anemia. Some of the prescribed treatment may be one or more of the following:

  • Strict diet plan of iron rich foods
  • Medication to treat complications

  • Intravenous iron therapy

What is a Protein?

The human diet is composed of three macronutrients and many micronutrients. Unlike carbohydrates and fats, the body does not easily store proteins, so there is a daily need for it. Proteins are used to create the contractile muscle tissue, the connective tissue and cell membranes, and contribute to the formation of the bone matrix and helps to maintain the fluid balance. It regulates the pH balance of the blood, works toward the formation of the hormones and enzymes that play roles in digestion and assists with the regulation of sleep and ovulation. Complete versus Incomplete Proteins

Proteins are broken down into amino acids during the digestive process, absorbed and then used to make new amino acids. The body cannot make eight of these amino acids, which are referred to as the essential amino acids. These are leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan and lysine. All animal proteins are considered to be complete proteins because they contain all eight essential amino acids. Plant derived proteins, on the other hand, are considered to be incomplete because they lack one or more of the essential amino acids. Many people assume that because plant proteins, with the exception of soy and soy products, are incomplete that animal proteins are better. However, with a varied vegetarian or vegan diet, there are more than enough sources of protein to get all of the nutrition and the right amount of protein every day. The bottom line: in this arena, the edge goes to animal based protein with all eight essential amino acids. The honorable mention goes to soy based protein, which is also a complete protein, and whey protein, which is also complete as well as the highest natural food source of BCAA.

Nutritional Value

Animal proteins are complete proteins and in addition give a number of vital micronutrients per serving. However, there are also other things that you get from most animal proteins: saturated fat and cholesterol. There are better choices and substitutions that can be made, but it is still clear that in terms of fat, calories and cholesterol, the plant based proteins are the clear winner. If you are a devoted meat eater, there are ways to minimize the damage that they can cause, including limiting red meat to only a small serving every ten days or less and opting for healthier cooking methods when choosing foods. Good animal protein sources include roasted, skinless turkey breast, salmon and other fish (which are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids), eggs and low fat milk and cheeses.

Plant proteins, while not complete, tend to have lower calorie counts and little to no saturated fat for the most part. However, there are a number of plant based proteins that do have higher calories counts than others, including nuts and rice. Opting for brown rice boosts the fiber content and makes it a healthier choice than white rice.

Both animal and plant based proteins can have their place in a well-balanced and nutritional diet, however, it is important to watch serving or portion size as well as calorie count to avoid overeating and getting too much of even the most important nutrients.

Cost versus Value

For many people, the cost of meat may keep them eating less animal based protein than they would opt for on their own. Meat is expensive, especially some cuts of beef. Turkey, and to a lesser degree, chicken are better sources of protein and tend to be cheaper. Buy what you can afford and learn ways to stretch the meal a little further. Remember, the need for protein is important but the amount that you need to eat each day is not huge.

Beans, one of the cheapest sources of protein, can be bought in bulk and stored in the freezer until they are needed. There is literally no limit to the ways that beans can be used - even in your baking in place of oil or other fats. You can choose from beans of every size and color and never have to make the same recipe the same way twice.


There are so many different types of proteins that you can literally find them everywhere that you look. Both animal and plant based proteins are widely available, including soy and soy products. In addition, protein supplements are often found in the stores right alongside other products or online for easy shopping. Protein supplements include liquid protein shots, shakes, puddings, powders and bars. When looking for a good supplement, make sure that it has high quality protein and does not have a lot of added sugar or other unnecessary ingredients. SAM-e is crucial in the manufacture of important compounds found in the brain, such as phosphatidylserine and neurotransmitters.

SAMe helps neurotransmitters bind to receptor sites.

Now that we've discussed some pros, let's talk about some of the cons.

SAM-e Information:

First, SAM-e appears to be very safe, with no signficantly adverse side effects reported in the literature. However, people with bipolar depression should avoid SAM-e.

In addition, people currently on prescription medications should speak with their doctor before taking SAM-e to discuss any possible drug interactions.

Other more common side effects include: nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort.

SAM-e is a nutrient that can be destroyed by your powerful stomach acids on contact. It is important you take an enteric coated SAMe supplement. The enteric coating allows the nutrient to pass through the stomach acids almost entirely unscathed and get into your bloodstream where it goes to work.

DIM - A Super Nutrient That Can Prevent Cancer and Help Balance Hormones As We Age

Many of patients are menopausal women and men older than 50. This is the age group where mid-life hormonal shifts and changes can become problematic and set the stage for the onset of future health problems, like breast, uterine and prostate cancers, if left unchecked. The problematic hormone that can get out of whack at this time is largely estrogen as "bad estrogens" can predominate which allow dangerous oxidation to occur that damages DNA. However, as I tell my patients, nature has given us a near miracle phytonutrient to reverse this process - DIM, short for Diindolyl Methane, and I'd like to tell you about it.

DIM - The Miracle Phytonutrient You May Be Missing


If you eat several servings of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, on a regular basis you likely get enough of DIM. Cruciferous vegetables like these are nature's carriers of DIM, an important phytonutrient that has been proven in numerous studies over the last decade to have amazing hormone-balancing and even anti-aging and anti-cancer properties. Deficiencies in DIM are thought to be behind the rise in hormone-driven cancers like those of the breast, uterine and prostate; colon cancer, and even coronary artery disease as too much estrogen can increase the risk for hardening of the coronary arteries and the decreased ability to dissolve blood clots.

DIM has the capacity to regulate and balance estrogen metabolism and neutralize "bad" estrogen metabolites and promote "good" 2-hydroxy estrogen metabolites that have been shown in research to be protective against breast cancer, as well as other types, in both women and men. In addition high animal fat diets and deficiencies of Omega 3 fatty acids also correspond to low levels of these good, cancer-fighting estrogen metabolites.

Recent research has also made an even more important connection with prostate cancer and these bad estrogens. It is thought now that prostate cancer is likely more driven both by a man's age-related decrease of testosterone and rise of these bad estrogen levels. Yes, men carry estrogen too and it can start to be the dominant hormone when testosterone starts falling. Estrogens, specifically the active estradiol type, has been shown to drive up PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels as much as testosterone. Another of DIM's good estrogen metabolites, 2-methoxyestradiol, was shown in studies to inhibit this increase of PSA. Regular intake of DIM would protect against rising PSA.

Early research with DIM in animals showed that chemically-induced cancers were prevented by supplementation with DIM. These studies also showed that the addition of DIM supported "selective apoptosis", i.e., the natural, programmed cell death which removes damaged cells. In humans, 500 grams (about 2-1/2 cups) of broccoli, a high DIM content food, was shown to increase good, 2-hydroxy estrogen metabolites in urine.

DIM, however, is not a "phytoestrogen", like soy and other estrogen-mimic vegetables and compounds. It has no estrogenic activity which makes it ideal for a man over 50 in andropause to help protect against prostate and colon cancer. Similarly, postmenopausal women, fearful of taking traditional HRT because of its documented side effects, can supplement with DIM without worry. In fact, new studies out of Italy show that a woman may be much better off using DHEA instead of HRT as it has been found to protect breast and uterine tissues from cancer growth. Adding DIM to augment DHEA can further serve in the protection against breast cancer in the majority of women.

DIM has also been shown in research studies to be heart protective as well as it inhibits "lipoprotein oxidation", i.e., which precedes the formation of dangerous, hardened plaques on arterial walls. DIM's two good estrogen metabolites, 2-hydroxy and 2-methoxyl estrogens are powerful antioxidants that prevent this oxidation from taking place.

Other health benefits of DIM include an aid to fat loss, especially in over-50 age men whose testosterone levels are decreasing, but also in estrogen-dominant perimenopausal women who may be lacking progesterone. Estrogen imbalance can store fat around the middle and also cause water retention. Because DIM decreases estrogen levels in men, it has the effect of releasing more free testosterone which can lead to increased libido.

How Can You Add More DIM To Your Diet

As I mentioned above, cruciferous vegetables are the food source of DIM, but there are also other foods and nutrients that can help boost DIM. These include the following:

  • Cruciferous (Brassica) vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, mustard greens, turnips, wasabi, watercress. Get at least 500 grams, or about 2-1/2 cups (100 grams equals ½ cup) per day. Note: If you take thyroid medication, be sure to eat these vegetables steamed which disables the goitrogen compounds in these vegetables that interrupt thyroid hormone production. Take thyroid medication in the morning 1 hour before eating.

  • DIM supplementation: Men can take between 100-150 mg per day; women should start with half, 50-75 mg a day. Note: If you take thyroid medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist about taking DIM supplements as they may interfere with the absorption of your thyroid medication.

DIM has been shown in research to be beneficial to the prevention of many estrogen-imbalance disease states in both men and women. Ask your healthcare professional about using DIM to augment DHEA's alternative HRT, anti-aging properties. In addition, if you take thyroid medication, be sure to ask them if DIM will interfere with its absorption.

Iron As a Plant Nutrient - In What Circumstances Should Iron Fertilizer Be Used?

I was recently asked to give a consultation on the state of the plants in a private garden. I live and garden in central Israel, which has a typical Mediterranean climate, similar to places like southern California, south west Australia, and central Chile. I was inspecting the plants together with the homeowner, and while looking at a citrus tree, the lady suddenly said, "Oh and please show me how to apply iron fertilizer - I'm not very happy about having to use it every two weeks or so".

She had apparently been "advised" by a neighbor's gardener that the fruit trees should be so treated during the growing season. I looked again at the tree and what I saw were lovely dark green healthy leaves and plenty of decent looking fruit hanging on the branches. Her remark typifies to some extent, some of the misconceptions common amongst home gardeners on the important subject of plant nutrition.


Iron is one of the twelve minerals essential to plant growth and development. It is a micro-element, meaning that the plant needs it in relatively small quantities, as opposed to the macro-elements, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, which are required and consumed in larger amounts. Iron is rarely absent from soils, at least in dry climates, but a high soil pH, meaning alkaline conditions, prevent it dissolving in the soil water, thereby rendering it unavailable to the plants' roots.

Iron As a Plant Nutrient - In What Circumstances Should Iron Fertilizer Be Used?

The clearest sign of iron deficiency (a condition known as chlorosis) is leaves whose blades are yellow, but whose veins are green. If however, the leaves are perfectly green, the indication is that iron is definitely not lacking. Applying iron fertilizer when it is not needed is not simply unnecessary, but liable to be damaging as well, since excessive micro-elements in the soil water can actually be toxic to plants.

Significant iron deficiency will seriously retard the plants, but the idea that fertilizer should be added to the soil in order to pre-empt the possibility of chlorosis is utterly false. Iron fertilizer should never be applied unless there are definite signs of chlorosis. This often occurs when building rubble has been buried in the soil, or when plants are close to a wall, and the lime in the cement residues raises the pH to levels where minerals crystallize and cannot dissolve. In general, the best way of securing soil conditions whereby the micro-elements are readily available to the plants, is to periodically add compost or humus to the soil, as this balances the pH towards neutral, (neither too acidic nor too alkaline) at least in the alkaline soils common to most dry climates.

Protein - How Much Do I Need?

How much protein do I need? Do I need more protein in my workout diet? Is too much protein harmful? These are some of the most common questions I am asked. I am going to answer these questions and more so that you can maximize your workout and get the most out of your workout diet.

First question, how much protein do I need? For the average individual it's about .4 to .8 grams of protein per pound of weight, so that means a 200lb person needs about 120 grams of protein per day. That is equivalent to about 3-8 oz chicken breasts or 2-8 oz beef tenderloin fillets. Athletes need .6 to 1 gram per pound, so that would be 2-10 oz beef tenderloin or 5-8 oz chicken breasts, approximately. 


This brings me to question 2: do I need more protein in my workout diet? The answer: you don't need anymore protein than any other athlete. Many bodybuilders and "workout nuts" will tell you that you must consume massive amount of protein to build more muscle. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 1992 shows that consuming more protein than what is necessary to maintain a proper protein balance, does not improve strength or fat free weight gains. Basically, if you are an athlete, bodybuilder, or just someone wanting to add muscle, you do not need to supplement your diet with a lot of extra protein.

Protein - How Much Do I Need?

Now, as far as question 3 goes: is too much protein harmful? The truth is, nobody really knows. I read most of the popular medical and nutritional journals like, JAMA, The Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and The Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. There has been no conclusive evidence that says too much protein is harmful to a healthy individual. Excessive protein does put more of a strain on the liver and kidneys so there are some risks of renal damage and possible hyper filtration, but mostly for those who have been diagnosed with some type of liver or kidney problems. My take on it is, why risk it? Why waste your time and money trying to consume massive amounts of protein that you don't need? It is especially a good idea not to take the risk if your family has a history of kidney or liver disease.  

The key is moderation and balance. Keep your workout diet balanced in all areas not just protein. For example, after a workout don't just eat protein. Add some healthy carbs. This can actually promote more anabolic hormone profile that will reduce recovery after an intense workout. Great workout food equals a great workout. Diet is a very important key in any exercise program. Stick with this and you will get the most out of your workout diet.

There are many people who would like to lose weight today, but too many are going about it in the wrong way. Some will allow one or two meals per day, while some only allow all liquid, all the time.

It doesn't make a different what kind of diet you were on, it makes sense that returning to your pre-diet eating habits will cause you to return to your pre-diet weight - at best. Liquid protein diets are no different in that respect. That doesn't mean you should never even make the attempt. If the diet is working for you and you feel better and look better, why return to the old way that gave you so much trouble? Maintaining a healthy weight can be a great deal of work, but it is worth the trouble.

One of the reason liquid diets work so well is because they're low in calories. Keep this in mind if you ever try something else. Your calorie intake will have to remain the same, since that is one of the primary factors keeping the pounds off! Diets tend to have a variety of good food which will take away the hunger pangs, which will also help you lose or maintain weight. If you have a diet that works, keep it. You can still have some kind of unhealthy treat once in a while, so long as you stick to your diet in all other ways. That treat may give you a little extra weight, but if you stay on your diet without indulging for a while, you'll find that extra weight vanishing once again.

Is It Safe to Have a Liquid Protein Diet?

Many of the fad diets that become popular every so often are really just plain dangerous. Sometimes they tend to crowd out the many really good diet plans that are available. Just remember that any diet can be unhealthy if it is not properly managed, even a liquid protein diet. Some diets will consist of a protein liquid breakfast and lunch, but a dinner of solid food. That doesn't mean to just go all out with the one solid meal of the day. You're still on a diet, which means you should be careful of everything you eat. Two liquid shakes and several slices of pizza every day will not really help anyone lose much weight.
People who are already on a low calorie diet do not some other diet, liquid protein or otherwise. Calories are necessary for your body to function, and you need some just to survive from day to day. You should always consult your physician if you plan to go on a low-calorie diet, especially if that is less than 1,000 calories per day. In fact, it's always a good idea to consult a physician regarding any diet.

One Day in a Liquid Protein Diet

Liquid protein can be added to many diet plans. It can just be a little added nutrition, or it can replace entire meals. For example, following is a menu for women that is has mixture of both liquid and solid nutrition. Breakfast is all liquid food, for this diet, meaning that there are plenty of great foods to keep the dieter satisfied throughout the day - though the protein supplements taste pretty good, too!


- Protein smoothie: a half cup of orange juice with protein powder and a half cup of mixed


- Water, green tea, or herbal tea, unsweetened.

Mid-Morning Snack

- A protein shot or a protein bar.

- Water, green tea, or herbal tea, which can be sweetened with a half teaspoon of honey, if



- A garden salad consisting of: an ounce of chicken or tuna, a cup of lettuce, five grape

tomatoes, a stalk of celery, a radish, one small carrot, and an ounce of cubed or shredded

cheddar cheese, with lemon juice dressing.

- A protein bar.

- Diet soda, green tea, or herbal tea, unsweetened this time.

Mid-Afternoon Snack

- A liquid protein shot


- A small serving of lean red meat, fish, or poultry, grilled or baked. Do not fry it.

- A cup of mixed vegetables, either fresh or frozen.

- A small baked potato with a tablespoon of margarine.

Evening Snack

- 2 cups of unsalted, unbuttered popcorn.

- Diet soda, water, green tea, or herbal tea without sweeteners.

Helpful Diet Hints

A liquid protein diet should be followed closely, but it doesn't have to be rigid or boring. Be creative. Substitute foods of equivalent value so your menu doesn't get boring. Make a daily meal plan - but don't feel required to stick to it. If you want to switch Monday's dinner for Wednesday's, because that's what you feel like eating, go ahead. Always shop on a full stomach to avoid buying items that are just too tempting to resist. And, of course, try to get some exercise. Even taking the stairs instead of the elevator can make a big difference.

Calories are going to be between 90 and 120, regardless of brand. In the days following your surgery, it will take quite a while for you to consumer even eight ounces of fluid.

During the first two weeks, you spend a large amount of your time consuming water and shakes, because your stomach will only hold an eighth to a quarter cup of food or liquid following your surgery. The first six months to a year following your surgery, your stomach will hold only a small amount of food.

Case Study - Eating Disorders and Nutritional Needs

Although eating disorders have been around for as long as there have been humans, the extensive research on them has existed for only about thirty years. It is known that there is a distinct and definitive correlation between a diagnosis of depression in the early to late teen years and the development of eating disorders. The three eating disorders that are most commonly studied and/or diagnosed are anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating.

The debate over whether or not obesity should be considered an eating disorder continues; while it is now considered a disease in and of itself, obesity may also become classified as an eating disorder and treated as both a psychological disorder in addition to being a physical problem. For now, it is a medical disorder, as well as a risk factor for a number of serious conditions, but not an eating disorder.

Case Study - Eating Disorders and Nutritional Needs

Anorexia is diagnosed when a person (predominantly females) refuses to allow her body to be over 85% of the weight that is normal for her height. Psychologically, the person who is diagnosed with anorexia is obsessed with weight and body image and rigidly monitors everything that goes into his or her mouth at every moment, even counting out the calories in the toothpaste that they might use that day. The DSM-IV-TR, the diagnostic tool for the mental health field, has these criteria for diagnosing anorexia nervosa:

- Unable or unwilling to keep body weight at or above 85% of the normal level

- Intense fear of gaining weight or, more importantly, of becoming fat when they are obviously and dangerously underweight

- Obsession with weight and body image to the point of detriment to the self esteem

- The absence of three menstrual cycles in a row

Some anorexics will spend hours exercising, even when they are exhausted and their muscles are hurting. They may not be sleeping correctly and many of them will have heart problems as a result of their extreme weight loss.

Warning Signs:

- Preoccupation with food, eating or dieting

- Compulsive or excessive exercising

- Negative self esteem

- Withdrawal from friends and family, especially if the social event will involve food

- A complete loss of menstruation

- Intolerance to cold temperatures


The bulimic will eat, either a small amount or a large amount, and then compensate for the calories that they have consumed by either exercising too much, taking laxatives or making themselves vomit. The typical cycle is binge and purge, where the bulimic will eat huge amounts of food, often more than a full day's worth of calories at a single sitting, and then will vomit immediately. If vomiting becomes problematic, laxatives might be used.

Diagnostic Criteria

- Consumption of large amounts of food, or a total lack of control during the eating cycle

- Recurrent behavior of trying to compensate for the eating/overeating.

- Binge eating and compensatory behaviors at least twice a week for at least a three month period

- Self evaluation that is overly influenced by weight and body shape

- Bulimic behavior that does not occur only during episodes of anorexia


Like anorexia, the presence of depression tends to increase the likelihood of developing an eating disorder. The group that is most affected by this eating disorder is adolescent Caucasian females who are also more likely to abuse diet pills and laxatives.

Binge Eating

Binging is different from the other two eating disorders in that there is no effort to lose weight, no obsessive compulsion to exercise and no supreme need to exercise after eating. The binge can be compulsive snacking that happens mindlessly all day long or can be a huge meal that encompasses a full day's worth of calories in a single sitting. If this happens continually, the metabolism will slow and eventually stop working altogether, leading to weight gain. Because stress is a major factor for binge eating, the weight gain alone is enough to trigger another binge episode, leading to a vicious cycle of stress, binging, stress, binging, etc.

Other risk factors for binge eating include:

- Stressful situations

- Specific upsetting thoughts

- Feeling guilty about something one has done

- Feeling socially excluded or isolated

- Worries about problems, the future or responsibilities

- Boredom

Recovery Possibilities

After five to ten years, half of those who were treated for bulimia had recovered, 30% had relapsed at least once and 20% were still diagnostically considered bulimic. Those who had double diagnoses, specifically substance abuse and bulimia, were the least likely to have full and meaningful recoveries.

Three Eating Disorders, Three Women

Elaine was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at the age of 20 and has been in counseling for about a year. She has slowly regained some of her weight, but has relapsed several times during this time period. Elaine has spent several months in the hospital to be given IV fluids and has even had a scare with her heart. After several months of renewed counseling efforts, she is making some slow progress. At this point, she is eating only small meals, mostly liquids and semi-soft meals. As part of a contract that Elaine signed with her counselor, she is only allowed to exercise at a slow to moderate pace no more than fifteen minutes per day and must have something that counts as a small meal at least every two hours.

Elaine has agreed to add a liquid protein shot as one of her mini meals, giving her 25 grams of highly digestible protein and all of the vitamin C that she needs every day. She is pleased with the fruit-based flavors and is progressing, slowly and carefully.

Evelyn, on the other hand, was diagnosed with bulimia. Her method of choice is to binge, consuming up to 5000 calories in a single sitting at times, and then forcing herself to vomit. At times when she is unable to vomit, she consumes a double dose of laxatives after an hour of jogging. She has destroyed the enamel on her teeth from the constant vomiting; she no longer goes to the bathroom normally because she has developed a dependence on the laxatives. She finds herself plotting her next binge, including what she will eat and when. She always wakes the next day vowing not to do it again, but by mid-afternoon, she is thinking of the binge that she will have next.

Part of her counseling program will be to start eating healthy meals. She will also be treated for the health conditions that she has brought on herself, including the damage that she has done to her intestinal tract. Using the liquid protein shot will help her to keep her metabolism high and keep from being hungry throughout the day. Evelyn will also keep a diary of her trigger foods so that whenever she feels that she might binge, she can find an alternative behavior.

Becca is 43, newly single and a binge eater. She has always been a little overweight, however, in the last few years she has really picked up weight - whenever she has had a bad day or feels lonely, she turns to food for comfort. The food has been increasing in amount and the binges are coming more often as she spirals out of control. Her doctor tells her that she is borderline for hypertension and diabetes and that her cholesterol is completely out of control. She starts a new, healthy dieting plan and starts walking in her neighborhood once a day. To keep herself from feeling hungry, she uses the 25-gram liquid protein shot as a between-meal snack. Chemotherapy and Radiation Treatments and the Need For Good Nutrition

Cancer itself may not be problematic; in fact many types of cancer can continue to grow in the body without any warning signs at all, until it is quite widespread or starts causing other organs to malfunction. For this reason, it is important that all screening test schedules be adhered to. However, even with proper screening there are times when the cancer can grow without notice. In most cases of cancers that are deemed treatable there are three courses of action which may be taken individually or in some combination with one another. These are: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

The side effects of both chemo and radiation can make a patient miserable and may seem like they are worse than the cancer itself. These include: nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, anemia, hair loss, fatigue, mouth ulcers and sores, yeast infections, depression and anxiety, insomnia and pain. Whey protein is an optimal source of amino acids, necessary for a number of the body's functions. The whey protein isolate has 90% protein but less lactose, especially beneficial for those who are lactose intolerant (Source: Segounis). In addition, whey protein is also important to prevent muscle breakdown which may be a problem in the presence of lowered caloric intake. The body, needing energy will use up the energy reserves and will then turn to the muscles for more energy, breaking them down and leaving the body even weaker.

Protein Supplements -- A lack of appetite can be a major problem. If there is a moment when you do feel hungry, you should have a snack that is handy to have when you are ready. Protein snacks and supplements include shakes, bars and liquid protein supplement shots. Protein bars should have a high amount of protein but limited sugars because the sugar, can depress an already stressed immune system.

Amino acids are important, and are the building blocks that many functions are built upon. The body makes a number of amino acids beyond glutamine, however, it cannot make eight of them. The eight amino acids not made by the body must come from the foods that we eat- both from animal and plant based sources.

Animal proteins are complete, meaning that they have all eight of these amino acids. Plant proteins are not complete because they typically are missing one or more of the amino acids. The only exception to this is soy protein which is complete. The eight essential amino acids are: threonine, isoleucine, leucine, valine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan and lysine. In children, histadine is also needed from food sources.

Antioxidants -- Antioxidants are meant to prevent the damage of free radicals in the body. Free radicals also multiply in the body because of sun damage, smoking, poor diet and other factors. Whether antioxidants are good for cancer patients or not is a serious debate. Chemotherapy generates free radicals to destroy the cancerous cells. On one side of this debate are the doctors who believe that since antioxidants seek out and neutralize free radicals, then those who are using chemo should avoid antioxidants or at the very least not add extras to their diet. However, there are doctors who think that antioxidants not only boosts the effectiveness of the chemo or radiation treatment, but also lessens the worrisome side effects! (Source: Gottlieb, 2000)

Your own doctor may be on the opposite side of the antioxidant debate than you yourself are. You may want to present your side of the issue and work out a discussion together. Your best care depends on everyone being on the same page, working as a team.

Green Tea -- Green tea, as well as other teas can help people to feel better. It also is beneficial for its anti-cancer properties. You can drink several cups of green tea per day, either hot or cold depending on taste. In addition, you can use green tea supplements as well. Again, before starting any supplements, discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

The leading cause of both death and disability in the United States is coronary heart disease, accounting for about 40% of all deaths. A million new cases of coronary heart disease are diagnosed every year as well. There are many forms of coronary heart disease, including myocardial infarction and angina pectoris, both caused most typically by veins and arteries that are blocked off and narrowed by deposits called plaque. Known medically as atherosclerosis, this blockage prevents oxygen-rich blood from making it to the heart or can block off blood flow to other areas of the body, including the brain. This reduced flow of blood to the brain can result in a cerebral vascular accident, commonly referred to as a stroke.

There are four major types of risk factors for coronary heart disease, some that can be changed and some that cannot. These four types include bodily characteristics, health habits, community, lifestyle and cultural factors and personality. Each of these four categories includes several sub-headings that should be considered individually to assess the real risk of coronary heart disease.

Stress and Personal Life Styles

Although coronary heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States, the rate of death has decreased roughly 35% in the last forty years and is progressively decreasing. There are several factors that influence this progress, including better education about general good health. There are several studies that have been done in regard to personality types as well - identifying the Type A personality (high stress, hurried, competitive and hostile) which is at a high rate for heart attack and the Type B personality, which is more relaxed and less at risk.

Although most people assume that it is the stress that is the impetus for heart disease, it is not the case. Hostility is a bigger factor for determining the risk factors for coronary heart disease, with the more hostile people at higher risk for having a fatal heart episode.

Can Loneliness Cause Heart Disease?

Having a support system and social network can help to alleviate some of the stress that is felt through life, whether or not it is a typical stressor or something more serious. Support that is given by a woman has been shown by studies to have more impact on good health than that of a man, regardless of who is getting the support. Another study showed that pet owners had lower rates of coronary heart disease as well as lower blood pressure than non-pet owners.


The number of adults who are considered to have pre-hypertension is 20% of the population in the United States. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major factor for coronary heart disease and is considered by most to be one of the most common and leading causes to consider. Chronic anger and stress can raise hypertension in many people, especially for those who are more susceptible to it. (Type A personalities, for example).

Finding ways to reduce stress and to accept the stress that cannot be changed is important not only to physical health but to mental health as well. However, one of the most common sources of stress seems to be the workplace.

Reducing Risks of Coronary Heart Disease: A Case Study

Beth is 68, and her son, Bret, is 38. Both have been diagnosed with heart disease and both have been directed by their doctors to make changes in their lifestyle and to reduce their risk factors as much as possible. Beth is twenty pounds over her optimal weight, while her son is fifty pounds over his own. Neither of them is very active any more, although they both enjoyed golf, bowling and tennis in the past. Neither of them is a smoker, which is a plus; however, both of them have major stress in their lives. Beth just retired from a job that she enjoyed and she finds herself lonely most of the day, unable to figure out what to do with her newfound time. Bret, on the other hand, has been very busy, trying to find a new job because he loathes the man that he works with, he loathes his office and he loathes his job in general.

The first step for mother and son is finding a new dietary plan and returning to exercise. Tennis is not on the horizon quite yet, however, but golf and bowling might be enough for right now. They are both going to reduce the amount of red meat that they eat and eliminate all simple carbohydrates from their diet. They are also going to swap out their fat sources for healthier fats, including Omega-3 fatty acids.

Bret is not as dedicated as his mother and she is soon well on the way to her goals. Her weight is down by fifteen pounds, and her blood pressure and cholesterol levels are within normal limits. She has moved beyond the weekly golf games and bowling with her son and added daily walks; one day a week she adds a jog for the last part of her walk, adding a little more distance every day as she gets stronger and stronger. Beth's last five pounds are no longer a problem, as they are now healthy, lean muscle mass instead of flab.
